What is COPPA?
COPPA is a federal law that stands for the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. It protects the online privacy of children under the age of 13. The law says that websites and apps must obtain clear parental permission before they can collect, use, or share any personal information about a child. This includes basic details such as names, email addresses, and usernames. COPPA does not apply if no student data is collected.
Our Commitment to Student Data Privacy
COPPA allows schools to act as a bridge between technology companies and families. The LIU helps pass your permission along to the website or app creator. Please note: The LIU cannot sign or grant permission on your behalf. Your choice is what matters.
The LIU follows all state and federal safety rules. We evaluate every website and application before students use them in our classrooms. When we review these digital tools, we evaluate three criteria:
- Collecting Least Data Necessary: We make sure approved apps collect the absolute smallest amount of information needed to make the lesson work.
- Data Privacy: Your child’s information is only used for school. It is never sold, traded, or used to show them ads.
- Strong Security: We check that our digital partners use industry-standard security and encryption to keep student data safe from hackers.

Each resource found below on this page contains a link to a privacy policy, which describes how that website collects and uses student data. These core digital tools utilized by the LIU may require limited, personally identifiable student information to function properly (e.g., to create a secure student login).
