In anticipation of the newly released PA Common Core Eligible Content, The Luzerne Intermediate Unit has created both, a Math and ELA Common Core Curriculum. Working with a foundation from the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the ELA Curriculum includes such features as extended thinking experiences, focused standards, suggested activities, and additional valuable resources.
How we got here:
Based on a collaborative effort between ELA teachers and IU specialists with years of teaching experience, common sense, and a combination of research-based best practices, this curriculum was created to allow for ease of use, accessibility, discussion, customization, modifications, updates, and opportunities for expansion. Most importantly, it creates a shift in thinking in the hopes teachers refer to this document on a regular basis to drive instruction,increase student achievement and cultivate students who are college and career ready.
The Luzerne Intermediate Unit has created both a Math and ELA PA Common Core Curriculum. Working with a foundation from the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the ELA Curriculum includes such features as extended thinking experiences, focused standards, suggested activities, and additional valuable resources. In addition, while K-2 is working towards the third grade PA Common Core Eligible Content, grades 3-8 have been aligned to PA Common Core Eligible Content. Grades 9, 10, and 11 have been aligned to the Keystone Literature Exam.
Working with a foundation from the Common Core State Standards Initiative, including both content standards and standards for mathematical practice, the math curriculum offers such features as mathematical practice applications, opportunities for depth and breadth while expanding a domain, shifts in content between grade levels, and additional resources to maximize and enrich instruction. Grades 3-8 have been aligned not only to the Common Core but also the PA Common Core Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content. The high school is subject specific and has been aligned to the Keystone Exams.
Finally, a facilitator’s guide is provided for Intermediate Units to read and utilize the curriculum as well as suggestions for creation of future professional development opportunities within respective districts. This progressive and innovative product can be of mutual benefit for all stakeholders.
