Literacy

Literacy is the foundation of education and is essential for learning. Without literacy all other learning is impossible. Literacy entails reading, writing, speaking and listening. Teaching Literacy is the job of all stakeholders and it is critical to embed evidence based research practices across content.

LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) 2nd Edition

  • Provides deep foundational knowledge to teachers enabling them to understand how students learn to read, write and spell. Teachers gain an understanding of language structure which allows them to make instructional decisions about their core programs and programs for students who struggle. (Participants will be responsible for purchasing their book prior to attending training. Bringing the book that corresponds to your scheduled session is a requirement for participation.
    Module 1 is a pre-requisite for all other modules.)

Early Childhood LETRS

  • Supplemental to LETRS module based on growing body of research, this workshop is geared toward preschool and kindergarten teachers to deepen their understanding of early literacy and enhance their strategies to help young children develop the foundation skills needed for learning to read and write.
    • Audience: general education teachers, special education teachers, reading specialist, speech and language therapist, school psychologist and administrators
    • Duration: One full day

Para Reading LETRS

  • Based on the five components of effective reading instruction, this workshop not only trains paraeducators, it also provides them with the foundation of a proven, research based system of teaching.
    • Audience: para educators
    • Duration: One full day (training can be broken into sections and conducted on Act 80 days in 1 or 2 hour increments)

5 Big Ideas of Reading Instruction

  • Instructional strategies in each of the five essential components of elementary reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension). Designed for elementary teachers to increase knowledge of high-leverage strategies designed to strengthen core instruction.
    • Audience: general education teachers, special education teachers, reading specialist, speech and language therapist, school psychologist and administrators
    • Duration: 2-3 Hours

Acadience! Essential- Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills

  • Includes research base for Acadience, modeling and practice with each subtest in the assessment. Designed for school systems using Acadience for the first time.
    • Audience: general education teachers, special education teachers, reading specialist, speech and language therapist, school psychologist and administrators
    • Duration: 1 Full Days

The Talking Classroom

  • Oral language is the foundation for reading comprehension. This workshop will provide participants with the skills and strategies needed to support the development of oral language skills of students in today’s classrooms. These engaging strategies, designed to create meaningful opportunities for elaborate oral language centered on the development of academic knowledge will emphasize listening, models of good language, authentic conversation and sentence elaboration. (Each participant will be charged a fee for the book)
    • Audience: general education teachers, special education teachers, reading specialist, speech and language therapist, school psychologist and administrators
    • Duration: 1 full day

Fifty Nifty Reading Strategies: Connecting Research to the Classroom

  • Based on the work of Judith Dodson, this session will provide participants with a multisensory, lively, and engaging approach to literacy instruction. The workshop content provides the practical application of LETRS content. The strategies are designed to provide support to students in the five components and three tiers of reading instruction. The strategies and activities reinforce some of the most important concepts of literacy instruction and have been validated through evidence-based research in literacy development. These strategies are designed to provide students with ample opportunities for repeated practice which lead to mastery and automaticity. All strategies will be organized within the MTSS three-tier framework. All participants will receive a book. (Each participant will be charged a fee for the book)

    • Duration: 1 Full day
